Dr. Gloria Beim On The Today Show

A highly respected female orthopedic surgeon and nationally known health writer have teamed-up to produce the first authoritative guide for keeping female athletes -from elite competitors to working mothers trying to fit in a work-out - healthy and injury free.

The need for this book is tremendous.  The enactment of Title IX, in 1972, the federal legislation that prohibited sex discrimination in sports, has spectacularly fueled female participation. For example:

  • Girls are getting into softball in such large numbers that the Louisville Slugger Bat Company introduced an entire line of women's softball bats.

  • 40 percent of new golfers are women

  • Nike has formed a new unit to focus specifically on its women's line.
The number of women in sports has increased 22 percent in ten years.

  • Girls involved in some kind of high school athletic activity leaped from one in 27 in 1971 to one in three today.

  • Female college athletes' participation in sports is growing at 9 percent a year while male athletes' participation is growing at only 3.3 percent.

  • Women are contributing to a 10.3 percent increase in soccer equipment sales

Today's emphasis on health and fitness has encouraged women of all ages to participate in sports -most of them just for fun.

The Female Athlete's Body Book: How to Prevent and Treat Sports Injuries in Women and Girls (click here to order) presents sound advice on an array of gender-specific concerns including:

  • How to minimize injury while enhancing sports performance

  • The explicit needs of young, mature, and pregnant athletes

  • How to deal with menstrual problems, bone loss and eating disorders

  • What to do when an injury occurs and more.
